On the Possibilities of Painting

On the Possibilities of Painting
by Juan Gris, translated by Betty Ryan, edited and with an afterword by Sonny Saul
Pleasant Street Books, 2015

A small and colorful pamphlet consisting of a lecture delivered by the great painter, Juan Gris, in 1924 at the Sorbonne in Paris. One of the very few printed items among the possessions of Betty Ryan when she died in 2003, it was typed out in English, and looked very old. I decided, finally, that it was worth formally printing/ publishing - even though a slightly different version of it has once appeared within the large biography of Gris by Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler. Gris has thought this question through and his thought merit attention.
